Luster vs. Color!
Who will win? We will figure out on L vs. C!!! Wahoo! This is your hos Gabi Gaines!

I think luster is better than color, because it is the way a mineral reflects off the surface, and each type of mineral has a different luster. Color helps a little, but not a lot. The reason why color doesn’t help so much is because more than one type of mineral can be that color. For example, one mineral could be pink and the other could be pink, but they are different minerals. The luster helps because those two pink minerals have a different luster. That is what I think about luster and color. And… drum roll please… luster wins!

I am Tai' McCaskill and this is why I think luster is a better way to define a mineral. I think it's a easier way because luster shows where the mineral came from, and what it looks like.

The luster of a mineral is the way its surface reflects light. Luster is a better mineral identification tool than color, because it shows the different aspects and the different textures of a rock throughly. In order to show the true colors of the rock, luster has to be present because luster reflects light. Color is the spectrum of light, which means
it is distributed from light.

The reason luster is more reliable than color is becuase some minerals or the same color in the shade but in the light they show different lustrs.ex.two minerals are blue but in the sun one stays dull while the other is sparkly.

Hey Ms.Bynoe it is Genae!
Your question was why is luster more reliable than color when identifying minerals? Well i was having a very hard time thinking about the answer. Why you may ask? Well I am at the library because I am in the process of moving and I brought all my other homework accept for science. I wrote down the answer in class and that is another bad thing about it. Well anyways my answer is luster. I choose luster because it is a shine or sheen especially from reflected light. This will help scientists or geologists identify minerals better. Other wise i shall see you tomorrow.

Luster is better than color because one reflects light from a surface and the other one is observed physically and provides to little information.

Dear Mrs. Bynoe,

I think luster is a better mineral identification because color only shows what the looks like on the outside. I think luster gives more deph. Luster could probally help determine how old the mineral is. Luster has more quality than color does. Even though luster can reflect light it is still a better mineral identificator.

Luster is a better mineral identification tool than color because a mineral has a crystal structure. Luster is a substance that is in a rock that makes light reflect off the rocks surface. Color is in most minerals, but is not in crystal or quartz because they are clear. Therefore luster is best to idenify a mineral.

Luster is a better way to identify minerals because alot of things other than minerals have a streak. Luster does better identifying because if a mineral is a mineral the figre will be shiny and glassy. But if the mineral is not a mineral than it would have the opposite, it would have an unshiny and non- figure. With streak or color the unmineral may still have a color.

Luster is a very important property. It shows you if it is a metallic or non-metalic luster. That means tha if it is a non-metallic luster it is further subdivided into how brilliant the mineral reflects the light: vitreous (like glass), adamantine (brilliant, bright like metal), pearly, greasy, oily, dull, et cetera.Color is counted as a property but we usually don't use it.It is very tricky. For example, quartz, it may have a variety of colors (colorless, purple, blue, pink, black, violet, green, tan, et cetera).

Hi Ms. Bynoe,

I think luster is a better identification tool than color is because every rock has color. But the luster of a rock is differnt. There is a metallic luster, pearly luster, even a greasy luster. A luster can tell more about a rock than color can. For example, if a mineral was Adamantine, it will have a high refractive index. Or if an a mineral had a greasy luster, it has a great abundance of microscopic inclusions. THat's why I think luster is better than color

Thanks,

Hi,I'm Maria Ocampo this is about why Luster more reliclrle then color. This is what I say about luster. Dull Luster:Minerals that have a dull luster have a earthy of soil like or clay like reflective surface. And the other one is luster that shiny minerals have a glassy almost a mirror type of reflective surface. And that lest thing that I will say is Metallic luster that have a metal reflection to them such as gold are said to have a metallic luster.

Luster is more reliable for identification because the color of one mineral can be the same as another mineral. The luster of one mineral is all ways different than another.

Dear Mrs.Bynoe,

Luster is a better mineral identification tool than color because Luster has a better use. For an example of luster is glitter, sparkle, lipgloss and sheen. Luster is also a better mineral identification tool because it sometimes uses color. you can tell if something is luster because of its reflection of light.

I think luster is a better identification, than color because you can describe it better. Like if they color a mineral, you will not be able to describe the mineral. The color is seen in different kinds of species. If you think that luster and color is the same thing it is not the same thing. That is way luster is better then color. Why is luster a better mineral identification tool than color?

Luster is a better identification tool than color because luster is more reliable than color.Luster has minerals and color has a form. Luster also has a surface of crystal, rock,or mineral.

Dear Ms.Bynoe,

I would have to rely on both color and luster to identify a rock, because if you were blind you would have to rely on luster. However, if you were not blind you could rely on both color and luster. Personally, my preference would be luster. For example,a black and white rock, there are a whole lot of black and white rocks in the world but there are different textures of it.

I think luster is a better mineral identification than color.I think that because luster you can only polish it to make it a more shiny, because it has metal in it,and luster is really like metal. Color is often double edged in mineral identification.Luster is very glassy like quatz, and luster can not be cofused with color. Kelton J. Reid

Luster is a better minerial indentificationtool than color because of the reflection of the light. The brighter it shines the easier you can classifiy what type of minerial it is.It's probablynot as hard to tell.On the other hand you can some times not tell the exstact color it is.The minerail might look like a red but at the same time look like a pink. Also the definition it self says it tells very little information.

Eddie said...

The color of something is exactly what it is. Red,Blue,Green, etc. The luster is the "shine" of an object . bright or dull.

defenitions:
color:The state or quality of things of shining by reflecting light;glitter, spakle, sheen,or gloss
luster:The quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the object, usually determined visually by measurement of hue, saturation, and brightness of the reflected light;saturation or chroma;hue

LUSTER vs. COLOR

The American Heritage Dictionary defines luster as "the shine from the surface of a mineral. Luster is important in describing different kinds of minerals. It is usually characterized as metallic, glassy, pearly, or dull." Dictionary.com defines color as a trace or particle of valuable mineral, esp. gold, as shown by washing auriferous gravel.

Color does not provide enough information because all minerals can be the same color and nobody would be able to tell which is which. Luster provides enough information because it's divided into different subcategories that tell you more about a mineral.

Why is luster a better mineral identification tool than color?

The color of a mineral is a physical property that is easily observed. It provides with very little information. Luster reflects light from a minerals’ surface and is a better tool for mineral identification as it can help us classify minerals as metallic or nonmetallic

Anonymous said...

Dear Ms Bynoe,

I am not sure what the differences between the two are. I think that they are different in very few ways. I think the color of a rock defined just by looking at it. The color of a rock by itself does not enough information to identify them specifically. The color can only be used to identify rocks with their own color. As for luster, it shows how a rock has light reflected from the rocks surface.

Well it wasn't easy, but I got it done. I hope I did well.

Luster is a better mineral identification tool than color because luster is the way minerals are polished. It is also the way minerals shine. Colors don't show how shiny things are. Luster also shows a mineral's color. That's why I think luster is better.

Luster is a better mineral idenification tool than color. You can automatically identify luster because ,a luster rock is glassy and porcelain. On the other hand, color is a light source that may be described in terms of hue, lightness, and saturation for objects and hue, brightness, and saturation for light sources.

"Color VS Luster"

The color of the mineral as described in natural light. Color is not a reliable identifying property. Chemical impurities, crystal flaws, and oxide coating on the outside of minerals can cause any one mineral to occur in many different colors.
Luster is the outward sheen or appearance of the mineral when held in natural light. Luster is divided into two major categories: metallic and non-metallic.
In other words luster is better than color.

Luster is better then color because,it narrows your choices down. Color doesnt narrow your choices down as much because, there are several minerals that can be the same color. Luster is more reliable because, there are not many minerals that reflects light from its surface. Luster has color also but,one mineral could have luster and the other mineral could not. So there's a example how luster is better.

Luster is more reliable than clor when identifing minerals because you can peform a simple test. It isn't reliable because it often provide too litle information. Color can be used to identify only those few minerals that always have their own charaistics color.

luster vs color

I think that luster is a better color, because it has a better visual. And color just does not give enough things to visualize, while luster is shinning by reflecting light, like shine, glitter, sparkle, and sheen.

Color vs. Luster

Why is a luster a better identification tool than color?

Luster is a better identification tool than color because luster is described as metallic or non-metallic. Metallic lusters are shiny and opaqe. However a non-metallic luster is dull, earthy, and waxy. Minerals have only one color when it's determined on certain atoms such as chronium which strongly asorbs portions of the light spectrum. Color is the easiest physical property of a mineral to see.

ZPB said...

The difference between color and luster.Luster in simple words mean sheen, radiance, and brilliance. The meaning of luster is the appearance of the surface of a mineral as to its reflecting qualities. Color on the other hand is a light source that may be described in terms of hues, lightness, and saturation for objects. Color is a light source that may be also described in terms of hues, brightness and saturation for light sources.

It is Genae again. Today I have a different answer. One answer is that luster is better than color because color is not very useful unlike luster. My other answer is that luster is the state or quality of shining by reflecting light; glitter, sparkle, sheen, or gloss. These characteristics of luster help geologists decribe luster better. now that you went over the answer in class I understood it better. Thanks for going over the answer because all I would of said was the definition of luster and why the answer is luster. So luster is the winner for being more helpfull for identifying and tests.

Luster gives a object a distinction, shine and more light. Luster is to have a glow of reflected light. For example, a decorative chandelier hanging with a glass object. Color gives a visual perception that enable one to differentiate identical objects. For example, to change a appearance by painting staining, or dyeing.

Dear Mrs.Bynoe,
Luster could use the color. Except luster reflects light but when it does you can see the color.
Luster: cloudy, glassy, glittery, sparkly, rusty etc.
Color: purple, blue, green, pink, gray, clear, yellow, red, gold, silver, etc.

Some information from the last time was correct. This time I have better information to write.Color is not to discriptive. When you discribe color you repeat the same colors. For example you can say blue, sky blue, torquise. If you look at it the are still blue one is just lighter then the other.Luster can discribe a rock in so many ways. For example you can say a rock has a glossy, glassy, waxy luster. They seem to tell more information about the rock then color. In conclusion luster tells mor information then color.

I learned in class today that my thoughts where right. Luster is better than color. My partner and I thought one of our rocks where differnt colors. I thought it was one color and she thought another. That relates back to the lesson.

I think that luster is a better identification tool because in the shade the mineral can be dull and rusty, but in the light it can be shiny and sparkly. Another reason why luster is better than color is because color doesn't show the characteristics of the mineral. Finally, the one reason luster is better is because color provides too little information about the mineral.

Luster verses color! I think its a tie, because luster has its shiney and glassy and on the other hand color has all of its beautiful colors. Color can narrow your choices down also, because many minerals do not have luster. Luster narrows choices down too, many minerals also don't have luster either. I think that both luster and color are both great identifaction tools.

Anonymous said...

Dear Ms.Bynoe,

I think that luster is more reliable than color because luster gives you a more descriptive version of what type of mineral something is. for example, If you use colorto describe a mineral some people might not know what you're talking about so you should use luster words to describe minerals. Some luster words are shiny, sharp, glossy, glittery, bumpy, and much more.
